Sugar and red maples make the Laurel Highlands rival New England for fall color — and it peaks in mid-to-late October. Here are the overlooks, drives, and timing that locals swear by.
There's a stretch of about two weeks every October when the Laurel Highlands turns almost unreasonably beautiful. Thanks to a dense mix of sugar maples and red maples, some say our peak color rivals New England — without the New England crowds or prices. Here's how to catch it.
When it peaks
In most years, color peaks in the middle-to-late part of October up on the ridges, sliding a little later in the valleys. It moves with elevation and weather, so don't guess — the Pennsylvania DCNR publishes weekly Fall Foliage Reports each autumn (pa.gov/dcnr) that are genuinely accurate for timing your trip.
The overlooks worth the drive
- Beam Rocks Overlook (Forbes State Forest, Somerset County) — a quick ~10-minute walk from Laurel Summit Road to a 180-degree sweep over a sea of color. Best bang-for-effort in the region.
- Wolf Rocks Overlook — a longer hike to a commanding view over Westmoreland County; one of the most impressive vantage points anywhere in the Highlands.
- Baughman Rock Overlook (Ohiopyle State Park) — a wide view over the Youghiogheny Valley, and a spectacular spot for sunrise if you can drag yourself out of the hot tub.
- Laurel Hill State Park — the Jones Mill Run Dam area is a perennial local favorite for reflections of color on the water.
Make it a scenic drive
If hiking isn't the plan, the region's winding back roads *are* the attraction. GoLaurelHighlands.com maps out northern and southern fall driving loops that string together overlooks, state parks, and small towns — pull-offs every few miles. See their fall guide at golaurelhighlands.com/fall.
Base yourself on the mountain
The magic of a fall trip here is having color right outside the window. Our Hidden Valley homes sit among those sugar maples, with fire pits and hot tubs for the crisp evenings. Fall weekends are quieter and often more affordable than summer — browse the cabins (the Eagles great room and South Ridge deck are foliage favorites) and book direct.
