Half an hour north of the ski country, Ligonier is the Laurel Highlands at its most storybook: a walkable town around a diamond-shaped green, wrapped in more genuine history than towns ten times its size. A full day here is one of the region's best.
Fort Ligonier — the French & Indian War, standing
Fort Ligonier is a full-scale reconstruction of the 1758 British fort, on its original ground — a rare survivor of the French & Indian War with a museum of remarkable artifacts (including a set of George Washington's saddle pistols). Its signature event, Fort Ligonier Days, is a three-day October festival with a grand parade, crafts, food, and battle reenactments at the fort. Dates shift yearly — confirm at fortligonier.org.
Idlewild & SoakZone — the oldest park in Pennsylvania
Founded in 1878, Idlewild is the oldest amusement park in Pennsylvania and one of the oldest in the country — and it's aged into something rarer than thrills: charm. Seven themed areas include Story Book Forest, Mister Rogers' Neighborhood of Make-Believe (Fred Rogers helped design it), and the SoakZone waterpark. It's the gentle, nostalgic counterpoint to the region's adrenaline — perfect for younger kids.
The Ligonier Highland Games
Held at Idlewild, the [Ligonier Highland Games](https://www.idlewild.com/discover-the-park/special-events/ligonier-highland-games/) bring Scottish heavy athletics, pipes, and a vendor fair to the park each year (typically late summer — check the official page for the current date). A genuinely distinctive day out.
The Compass Inn — 1799, furnished
In nearby Laughlintown, the [Compass Inn](https://www.compassinn.org/) is a restored 1799 stagecoach stop — tour the inn plus a reconstructed cookhouse, blacksmith shop, and barn, all furnished with period pieces and brought to life by costumed guides. It's living history done well.
The town itself
