A Hot Tub Cabin Weekend in the Laurel Highlands, Done Properly

Cold air, hot water, and a ridge full of colour. How to pick the right hot tub cabin for your group, what to do between soaks, and why the first one should happen the night you arrive.

There is a particular kind of quiet that happens when the air is cold enough to see your breath and the water is hot enough that you don't care. In the Laurel Highlands that combination arrives with the leaves, and it's the whole reason a hot tub cabin is the right way to do a fall weekend here — not a nice extra, the actual point.

Here's how to do it well.

Pick the tub for your group, not the other way round

Every one of our homes sits at Hidden Valley, about 90 minutes from Pittsburgh, and each one does the hot-water evening differently:

  • [South Ridge](/properties/south-ridge-hidden-valley-house) — the private hot tub is on the deck, facing the mountains. It's the big-group house: five bedrooms, room for sixteen, a two-storey great room with a stone gas fireplace, a game room, and a fire pit on the wraparound deck for the people who'd rather sit by flames than in water. One guest put it plainly: *"A mountain getaway … with a private hot tub! Did I mention the views from the deck are incredible?!"*
  • [Kooser](/properties/kooser-hidden-valley-retreat) — the one with a private sauna as well as the hot tub. Three bedrooms, sleeps ten, a wood stove inside. The sauna-then-tub sequence is what people come back for; we've written up how to run it separately, because it deserves it.
  • [Eagles](/properties/eagles-hidden-valley-game-room) — no tub, but the vaulted great room with its stone fireplace and the game room (pool, ping-pong, darts) make it the house for a group that wants the evening indoors. Sleeps twelve.

If the hot tub is non-negotiable, that's South Ridge or Kooser. If you're a crowd of sixteen, it's South Ridge. If you want the sauna, it's Kooser — there's only one.

The first soak is the night you arrive

Don't save it. Drive up, drop the bags, light the fire, and get in while the ridge is still going dark. The water is warm and the woods are cold and nobody has looked at a phone in an hour — that's the moment the weekend actually starts. Everything else is bonus.

What to do between soaks

The Highlands in fall reward a slow morning and a short drive. Pick one or two of these, not all of them:

Then come back, and get in again.

Booking notes, honestly

Two things worth knowing. First, weekends in October go first — it's the shoulder season in name only. Second, the rate you see on our site is already our best one; the same nights on the big platforms cost more, because the platform takes its cut. See the homes, or start with The Laurel Highlands Guide if you're still deciding whether this is your kind of weekend.

It is. Bring a towel to the deck.
